Wifi Takes Video Assist to the Next Level on Set

I have found in my experience that wifi has become invaluable to Video Assist on set.

A few years ago, the developer of QTAKE HD, the most advanced video assist system in the world, developed a module for his software to help people on set see what was being shot via wifi and any Apple IOS Device or Computer. They can now watch live during the shot or see playback on their Apple device. This breakthrough is amazing!  The only limitation had been the strength of the wifi signal we could get on set which would allow us to cover enough area.

Two things changed:

1. The phones, computers and iPads became faster and the processors inside these units have more stable signals.

2. The developers of QTAKE were able to make the QTAKE stream module more efficient.

Between the two, we have had more success getting images on these devices without hiccups. What I ended up doing recently was to add a wifi access point.

A wifi access point is something that boosts the signal and makes it stronger. I am able to control whether I want 5 GHz or 2.4GHz frequencies and choose specific channels to use, depending on how much traffic there is in the area.

“This breakthrough is amazing!”

Now I take this beautiful gray box (my access point) with two batteries inside and all I have to do is run a wire to it.  I love this box! I can put it anywhere – I can put it on a stand, on the floor or put it on a table.  It is battery operated and protected. I simply plug it into my cart which is attached to my computer, then plug it into the access point.  This access point has enabled me to give network access to my fellow crew members, such as the script supervisor, the onset prop, the set dresser, the Director, Producer and anybody on set that has an iPhone and has the Qtake Monitor app.  I can allow up to 16 people on my network.
